How to Play Risk of Rain With Hamachi

  1. Im not sure how to port forward, ive tried using my default gateway and forwarding a port over that, but when i enter it it says closed in the risk of rain client, could somebody tell me exactly how to set it up from scratch, and if its possible over logmein hamachi this would be great, it seems to be making my IP a certain thing i have no clue of, anyway thank you!
    • For now, VPNs like hamachi are not supported. Given the alpha status of the online mode, support will likely be added later on.

Port forwarding isn't as complicated as it sounds.

First you need to access your routers settings, very simple. Just enter 192.168.1.1 into your browser. If it asks for login information ask the person that set it up, or you can try googling the default login for your model. Generally something very basic. It might already be entered for you.

Unfortunately this is where my explanation gets vague because every router's settings menus look different. My own actually gives explanations of whatever menu I'm in, see if there's something like that to help you as you do all this.

But, there should be something that says port forwarding somewhere like a tab or an option on the side. Click that, obviously.

Then find a button or link that says something along the lines of "add custom service". (may not say exactly this)

It should bring you to a menu where you can enter the port to be forwarded, and probably give it a name. If it asks you to give a start and end port put the same one in for both, Risk of Rain only uses one port. If it gives you the option of choosing external and internal ports just make them the same. I suggest using the default port that Risk of Rain gives, since Leth (hopefully;)) knows what he's doing and wouldn't choose a port normally used by other stuff.

Now, you need to tell it to direct all the traffic it's allowing through that port to your computer. Which means it needs your Internal IP address (It'll be a variation of 192.168.1.#)
It might give you the option of choosing a system on the network, if you know the name of your computer (I hope you do because you should have made the name the first time you used the computer.)
if you're unsure or forgot the name here's how to find your internal IP if your using windows 7 and probably vista and 8: (I don't know anything about linux or mac osx, sorry.)

Go to the start menu and type "cmd" into the search bar and press enter. It should bring up a command window.

Now type in "ipconfig" and press enter, then look for a line that's labeled as your IPv4 or IPv6 address (you might have only one or both)(IPv6 is preferable)
That number is your computer's internal IP address. If you don't see one that says IPv4 or IPv6 look for a number that's similar to 192.168.1.# that isn't 192.168.1.1. Where # is a (probably single digit) number.

After you submit and apply all of this in your router's settings you should be good to go.

      • you might just have to open google and type port forwarding for "your router" might be easier as not all routers are the same
I do think it might be a good ideal for a tutorial but i know not all routers are the same, like say if you have a u-verse router it isnt that simple to port forward directly with the router
        • I know all my log in info and what not, i know how to port forward,i dont know what ports to forward though, and do i also need to port forward on my firewall?
          • Hamachi does work, just need to give them the IP displayed on your Online Co-op screen instead of the Hamachi-IP.

At least, thats what worked for me.

            • Um, that would mean Hamachi DOESN'T work then...If you were USING Hamachi and it were supported then you would have them input you HAMACHI IP not the ip given by the game.
              • You just need to forward one port. 11100 is the default selected in Risk of Rain, so I suggest using that one. You'd only run into problems if you chose a port used by another program. I don't think you need to worry about your firewall, but if you still have problems you can try that.
                • thanks, and the words next to the port will say open? or is that broken?
                  • do i port forward my ip? or my risk of rain ip , the one it gives me.
                    • thanks everyone! I go it working!
                      • Grats glad to hear you got it working, enjoy!
                        • Hello, as suggested above i've opened the 11100 port (thanks :) ) and actually in 'join game' i've the my local ip 127.0.0.1
There are dedicated IP /servers to play a co-op game? Or i'm automatically redirected to an "open" game when i just click 'join game' ?
                          thank you
                          • Your local IP is never 127.0.0.1. That's the Localhost option, which is basically a loop to your own computer. Trying to make people to connect to that makes them connect to your own computer. It's just set to that by default but it won't do anything for making other people connect. Your own IP is what's displayed at the host button.

There are no dedicated co-op servers, whoever hosts a session acts like a server for that specific session. You'll have to know said host's IP to join them, and of course they need to have their ports forwarded correctly.

                            • Yea I've had troubles with Risk of Rain awhile ago. Before this certain point I was able to port forward the game no problem and it worked. Until one day it stopped working, I checked the ports and everything is put in correctly but online the port say Closed and I cannot host a server. Any fix?
                              • Getting closed msg in online multiplayer. Ports open and working fine for starbound, in RoR it is saying they are closed. suggestions?
                                • Yeah, RoR is saying port closed . I know ive done everything right, not the first time ive port forwarded games.
Every other game that ive forwarded works perfectly. Just not Risk of Rain.
                                  • I cant make it work, i am really upset lol, is the firewall doing anything to my port? blockign it? x_x
                                    • Okay so I see alot of posts about ror showing that port is closed when in fact it is very much open. I have found that the may not actually detect the port you opened, but if you host the game, it will host successfully and your friends can join.
